What waste management services are there?

• Roadside collection is early Wednesday morning (...as in, put the bins out Tuesday night).

  • General waste fortnightly,

  • Mixed recycling fortnightly, and

  • Glass recycling every 4 weeks.

• A new bin for 'Food Organics and Garden Organics' (FOGO) is expected to be introduced in 2027.

• The Victorian Container Deposit Scheme has a refund point located at the Teesdale General Store.

• The Golden Plains Resource Recovery Centre (the Tip) is open 10am-3pm most Sundays at 141 Meadows Road Rokewood (28km from Shelford township). Other transfer stations are available at Geelong and Ballarat.

What postal and delivery services are available?

• Properties outside the township have roadside delivery by an Australia Post contractor. Large parcels might need to be picked up at Teesdale General Store.

• There is no Australia Post delivery to houses within the township west of the bridge.

• Community-managed Post Boxes are located at the Postal Hub in the township, with mail distributed by an Australia Post contractor. Large parcels might need to be picked up at Teesdale General Store.

• If you have neither roadside delivery or a community Post Box, mail addressed to your property will be held at the Teesdale General Store.

• ​A range of commercial courier services might deliver directly to your property.

• The major supermarkets deliver to Shelford.

• Some Bannockburn fast food outlets may deliver for a fee.

Which utility companies cover this area?

• Electricity infrastructure is managed by Powercor, with residents picking their retailer of choice.

• Gas bottles (45kg) can be rented through Elgas with delivery of replacement bottles ordered through Hewitt and Whitty in Inverleigh. 

• Water, for those on mains water in the township, is provided by Barwon Water.

• The township has a standpipe that operates on a permit system. The paid permit and key can be obtained from the Teesdale Store.

What are the telecommunications options?

• A Telstra mobile tower installed just 2km West of the township in 2024 delivers good service up to 5G for Telstra customers (and customers of the smaller companies that use that network).

• Optus customers (and the smaller companies that use their network) experience mixed results based on their location.

• Home phones (for those still using them) can be with any provider.

• There is no wired internet service available, with people using a mix of technologies, mainly satellite (NBN Sky Muster or Starlink) or fixed wireless.

• Free-to-air TV reception is hit-n-miss. Some people are OK, some rely on streaming services, and some have gone for Vast satellite television.

Where are the nearest medical services?

• Teesdale has a medical practice and a pharmacy.

• Bannockburn has medical practices, pharmacies and several allied health services.

• Hospital Emergency Departments are available in Geelong and Ballarat.

Where are the nearest emergency services?

• If you need an emergency service call 000.

• The nearest Ambulance station is at Bannockburn, however at times coverage may need to come from further afield.

• Neaby Police stations are at Inverleigh and Bannockburn.

• Shelford has its own CFA Fire Brigade which in an emergency works with our neighbouring brigades.

• There is a VICSES unit based in Bannockburn. 

• There is a publicly accessible AED Defibrillator at the Cricket Club.

What are the local education institutions?

• Shelford Primary School. Our local school.

• Bannockburn P-12 College. The school bus picks up and drops off at the Postal Hub.

• Bus services between Shelford and Geelong provide links to several schools, either directly or involving bus transfers. Check with the particular school for details.

What about early childhood services?

• Golden Plains Shire operates a Maternal and Child Health team.

• Information on Playgroups, Kindergartens, Family day care etc can be found on Shire's Child and Family page.

• Teesdale Kindergarten runs 3-year-old and 4-year- old (pre-prep) sessions.

• A new early learning and childcare centre is planned to open in Teesdale in 2026.

  • Spacious undercover deck with a great view across the oval to the Leigh River.

• None to-from Shelford itself.

• VicRoads is responsible for:

  • C143 Rokewood-Shelford Rd / Bannockburn-Shelford Rd and

  • C144 Inverleigh-Shelford Rd.

• Golden Plains Shire is responsible for all other public roads.
