Shelford Community Garden
A space for everyone to come together and share
The Shelford Community Garden is situated in Ormond Street between the tennis courts and cricket ground and is managed by the Shelford Recreational Reserve. The garden was established from an earlier community planning idea. Previous improvement grant projects included the establishment of an orchard, the purchasing and installation of a water tank, pump and irrigation system. After enduring set backs that included two flood episodes and Covid restrictions, the Community Garden was rejuvenated in 2022 and further supported by a Golden Plains Shire Community Strengthening Grant in 2023.

A small group of volunteers then set about rejuvenating the space, installing secure fencing, garden beds, purchasing and donating equipment. Shelford is now home to a welcoming, attractive and productive garden space where local residents meet, grow and share produce.

The garden is divided into two sections. The front garden section provides under cover seating, a BBQ and grassed area with well laid out garden beds, both raised and at ground level. Residents, visitors and volunteers including families with young children, are welcome to freely wander in and enjoy the ambience or venture along the pathways in search of an apple, strawberry, snow pea, and other seasonal produce. There are watering cans, hand tools and gloves available for anyone to use. Visitors may be lucky enough to spot some blue banded bees pollinating the flowers or spot one of their little clay houses. There are also some quirky art installations including our ‘Ducks On The Fence’ for a bit of fun.

The back section of the garden is where you can find the Indigenous Edible Garden. It consists of a winding gravel pathway that takes you on a journey to explore a very different style of dry garden. The plants have QR codes that provide more information about each individual plant.
This Community Garden Project is about bringing the community together, growing local produce and provides physical and social activities that benefit our community.

A "shop" sits at the garden's front gate, holding the fresh produce available.

Some items might show a price tag, and some will be free.

But donations are appreciated and can be made on cash or online.

All funds raised contribute to the ongoing costs of our community garden project.
